The Future for MMOs
Back to World of Warcraft (PC)

We’ve all heard of it, it is everywhere you look and it seems today that everyone and his or her mother is playing it.

Its World of Warcraft, Blizzard’s prized game made back in the winter of ’04 and, needless to say, it won’t be dying out anytime soon. In January of ’07, it surpassed 8 million subscribers, more than every MMO on the market combined. It is simple to see how and why it was able to accomplish such a  feat of marketing genius. For marketing, they simply posed the question: “What if Warcraft III was an MMO?” And people flocked to it, seeing themselves playing as their favorite type of character in Warcraft III and seeing crowd favorites such as Thrall, Jaina, and tons of others. They promised a wide open world which would be open to newcomers, but equally good to high level characters. And then Blizzard did what many companies fail to do: live up to their word.

So, in spite of WoW almost indomitable control over the MMO market, there are games coming out that are trying to beat it, or at least make a decent profit off of it. And in this article, we will look at the upcoming MMOs and whether they may flop or shine in the market.

Huxley: The newest MMOFPS to hit the market, Huxley has gained some attention because of how unusually good it looks compared to other MMOs or even FPSs in general. Its visual is that of extreme armor, crazy hairstyles and huge guns, a la Unreal Tournament. That being only one thing that might bring in customers, its vehicle selection mixes a style that I can only describe as modern army plus H.R. Giger. Little detail has been released, but they say that the battles will be like “Unreal Tournament meets Counter Strike”, so we can expect harried firefights throughout. I expect good things from this, because of how beautiful and open-ended it looks.

Tabula Rasa: This is a game that I, myself, have been looking forward to. It has been in development hell for 6 years and finally coming out this year (Hopefully). Its graphics, although not as good as Huxley, is up to grade with MMO’s coming out these days, if not better. It brings a new type of gameplay: an RTS with FPS type aspects with RPG leveling system. But unlike Huxley, this is all about strategy as everything is taken into account like weapon type, ammo type, stance, cover and movement are all meaningful in taking down your enemy; no mindlessly rushing here unless you wish an early death. The last, and most interesting aspect of Tabula Rasa is how it is able to add quests with an ethical twist. Would you rather destroy a dam to stop the villains, or simply warn the villagers? In this, they are able to make the quest not only test your skill, but your ethical ground. I would love to say that I have the highest expectations for Tabula Rasa, but they have put a heavy burden on their shoulders with such high expectations. These expectations will be hard to live up to even with 6 years.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning: I know I am not a tabletop fan, and never have been. The slow pace and careful planning of each move bored me to tears, and this is what mainly separated me from the Warhammer universe. And although I have never divulged myself into such culture, I know that there are plenty of fans. Graphically, the game looks stunning. Taking on the silly nature of WoW with a whole ton of realism, WAR is a game that will be a true feast for the eyes. In terms of gameplay, it seems to carry on the same note as a typical MMORPG: you aggro, they attack, you attack back, they attack, etc until death. The race system is nothing out of the ordinary: two sides fighting for supremacy over each other, with three races on each side. All-in-all, it is looking to be a typical MMORPG, but with the Warhammer fan base behind it, it will get some good sales.

All in all, these are the top MMOs that are coming out. Although there are many more, many of them are cookie cutter from others in the past. And although most of these games won’t get close to 8 million members, it’s nice to get away from Azeroth and into another massive world.
